New Desktop PC Assembled!!

Got my new desktop assembled. I had collected the quotations from Shwetha and PL Computer @ CTC, Secundarabad. PL was offering good numbers hence bought all the stuffs from them.

  1. Processor: AMD Phenom II x4 840 (INR 4600)
  2. Motherboard: Asus M4A88T M/USB3 (INR 4850)
  3. RAM: 2x2GB Corsair DDRIII 1333MHz (INR 2100)
  4. Hard Disk: Seagate Baraccuda 1TB 7200RPM (INR 2700)
  5. DVD Writer: Sony Writer (INR 1050)
  6. Cabinet: Cooler Master 690II - Transparent Back Panel (INR 5400)
  7. SMPS: Cooler Master 550W GX (INR 4400)
  8. UPS: APC 650VA (INR 3000)
  9. Wireless Card: DLink (INR 750)
  10. GeForce GT 710
  11. Dell 2209WA 22"
  12. Bose Companion 2 - 45-55VA 12V - 1800mA

Total: INR 28, 850/-

The cabinet and SMPS is just awesome and I felt I made a good decision in that. Also which leaves me a good place to upgrade a decent GPU later.

Only compromise I have done is to the motherboard and processor but it is more than what I require as of now.

Gigabyte GA-880GM, AMD Phenom II X4 840, Corsair XMS3 2GB DDR3(1333MHz), Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM, NZXT Gamma Black, Corsair 450W. any other suggestions folks?

Rajasekhar B Pai if it is an editing rig, u need atleast 4 gigs of ram... :)

Anoob Backer yah...2GB*2 is what i am planning

Rajasekhar B Pai k...

Rajasekhar B Pai dont worry about AMD, its gr8...works fine for me... I use AMD X II Phenom 955 BLACK EDITION... good performance... but i use 8gigs of ram, planning to max it to 16 gigs soon...

Rajasekhar B Pai Again, a good suggestion would be always to have 2 hard disks inside... a 250, 320 or rather 500 GB hardisk which would be the main drive containing the programs and the system files and the 1 TB one for storage and data. This way, the efficieny of the system doesent decrease over a period of time... all de best!

Anoob Backer ah cool! did u get that frm hyd?

Karthik Va i digged into this recently.. the above is for 50k budget. you can scale it

Karthik Va get 8gb ram :) my suggestion.. LR and PS loves more ram.. also split the disks as he said.. use 2x250GB HDD in raid 0 zero config. put LR catalog file , previews + PS raw cache + windows in it.. have a separate 500 GB for photos and documents.. setup might be slightly costly, but worth it.. after SSDs become cheap you can replace it :)

Karthik Va but i am not sure is the performance boost using raid is worth the money. have to read more :)

Rajasekhar B Pai i got it from CTC, hyderabad... Anoob Backer

Anoob Backer ?Karthik Va: seems good...as i already have monitor probably will be coming for a reasonable price...as the work is not that high for me with photos am planning for 4GB...what am really not sure abt is cabinet and SMPS....Gamma is pretty de...

Jobin Augustine To my understanding, Phenom is for over clocking. if you are an extreme gamer, you may require it. otherwise..Athlon II is good enough.. in last 1 year, my friends circle mainly took Athlon II because of cost advantage.

Rajasekhar B Pai athlon is a dual core processor while phenom 955 BE XII is a quad core processor which helos when u r using a 64bit system.. It especially helps for softwares like CS5 and gamin too.. CS5 takes up lots of ram as well as processor speed.. it helps the same to be faster i guess... i may not be right but i guess i am...

Anoob Backer ?Jobin Augustine: thanks for that info...i took a gaming rig and modified it thinking that photo/video editing will be benefited...there shud not much rendering that has to happen during photoshop and video compared to the latest games...so this configuration wud be an over kill for the purpose...let me see if i can get a benchmark for athlon vs phenom...

Jobin Augustine small correction on Rajasekhar's comment. Phenom and Athlon II are just series of chips. Athlon II doesn't mean 2 cores, it means second generation.

Jobin Augustine Atlon II X2 - means 2 cores, Athlon II X3 means 3 cores, Athlon II X4 means 4 cores.. like that.. for more details please visit http://www.amd.com/

Pranav Yaddanapudi i am surprised to see that a dedicated graphics adapter (ATI/Nvidia) is missing in the list. i think it is essential for photo/video editing kind.

Anoob Backer ?Jobin Augustine i went thru a some articles on the requirement of photoshop and came to know that photoshop doesn't need much of core apart from 2. its def RAM and Hard disk intensive adding more core is not gonna help "that much"...also t...

Pranav Yaddanapudi looks like the doc is from 2007. does it hold good even after 3-4 years? PS/LR not making use of hardware acceleration for display rendering?

Akhil Menon oh no, all set for battle?

Anoob Backer ?Pranav Yaddanapudi: display rendering shud be good enough for PS with onboard card these days...doc is pretty old but from programming perspective it shud be same now...memory management and other things are core of the product esp adobe maintains good std in those from beginning so shudn't change much...also key thing is he is talking abt 100 layers and lots of actions which i will never do of sure...

Anoob Backer ?Akhil Menon lol no battle all for love and peace :)...laptop connected to external VGA all the time is not that good idea hence will be getting a desktop soon...

Nitin Jadon take atleast 2 hard disks. and I mean this from perf point of view. disks are what I see as the slowest part in your setup.

Anoob Backer ?Nitin Jadon yes buddy sure will do that...250gigs added to the list for the OS and other stuff and 1TB for storage...

Anoob Backer ?Nitin Jadon do you get discounts for NVidia GPUs? :) if so will add that after sometime...

Nitin Jadon discounts are their but for folks abroad. simple answer is NO :)
a dedicated card can be added later. do make sure ur smps has enough power wattage and the space/fans in your cabinet for cooling.

Nitin Jadon yeah. I agree for your use. a dedicated card doesn't do a lot of work. software has been really using the GPU's these days for video editing/playback.

Jobin Augustine lots of discussion about graphics :). Your motherboard contains Northbridge chipset AMD 880G (thats why motherboard is named like that). this chipset contains ATI Radeon™ HD 4250 inside which is good enough. for reading more : http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/chipsets/8-series-integrated/Pages/amd-880g-chipset.aspx

Anoob Backer ?Jobin Augustine :) true...haven't been tracking hardware changes recently so became interesting....

Anoob Backer ?Rajasekhar B Pai Karthik Va Jobin Augustine Pranav Yaddanapudi Nitin Jadon finally got the machine assembled thanks for all the suggestions...final config which i took was x840, ASUS MB,2x2GB, 1TB, 650VA APC UPS, sony DVD RW, PSU - CM 550GX, Cabinet CM 690II with transparent back panel, dlink wireless...all from PL computers...
