Learning isn't a competition...Learn for life...

Learning shouldn't ever be a competition! Singapore has taken a crucial step for the greater good of the students. From next year, primary and secondary students can expect to see meaningful changes in how they will be assessed in school. More details here: https://t.co/8xwCzXvSOw pic.twitter.com/ahYUgSktdS — MOE Singapore (@MOEsg) September 28, 2018 Great posters created as well: 1. Pay attention to what they say. 2. Set goals together. 3. Don't compare. 4. Tell them it's ok to do mistakes. 5. Don't focus only on results.

A Joyous approach to Maths facts!

Was listening to Jo Boaler's talk given at The Global Math Project event. It is really creative to build those worksheets! What are students thinking about maths in the 2 activities in this film? Please share with any teachers still using timed tests. They are the beginning of maths anxiety for so many. The cool activity that is featured in the 2nd part of the film is in here: https://t.co/lwJOTKPeWB pic.twitter.com/y0SGWz5Kek — Jo Boaler (@joboaler) October 6, 2018 The worksheet can be found here . Watch - Prof. Mitra's The School In The Cloud

Been writing about education for some time now! Professor Mitra's The School in the cloud was a really interesting experiment as he detailed in his Ted Talk . I loved his talk! Winning the  TED Prize in 2013  enabled him to test his theory on a much larger scale & over a shorter timespan. Sugata’s wish was to build a School in the Cloud that would "help design the future of learning by supporting children all over the world to tap into their innate sense of wonder and work together”. By bringing SOLEs into the mainstream, Prof. Mitra has introduced new ideas about how children learn. Just watched " The School in the cloud "! Definitely, I think this will be a huge huge success! It isn't trivial but as he said it is that single step that we take towards the destiny that matters. I wish Prof. Mitra all the luck. Being is suffering, but you not only can deal with that but can improve it. You are a way more tougher than you think. By failing to prepare y

Why reservation? Or Why not reservation?

Note: Will be updated as I learn. We both will explore this together, so share comments after reading. The topic of reservation came in while discussing with my friends & I felt I couldn't convey thoughts due to the lack of time. So thought of penning it down. Before I start, we should consider a broader context of how caste has played in India since 400AD or earlier. A backward family should only get one round of reservation benefit.  People generally don't dig deeper to understand why caste based reservation came in India. There was a huge caste based social injustice against the minorities & Dalits etc. for many many years, in fact, few dates back to 400 AD. Few of those injustices I can recollect are slavery, untouchability, no right for education or enter school. Think of a race (life as a race?) where the socially forward caste enjoyed the benefit for many years & generations. Now to get those who were socially left behind (for many years) to same s

Why do we need to progress?

Savitha emailed a note about her recent blog post about progress , which touched up on a point which me/Anand was also discussing the yesterday during Adruth's birthday. I've been blogging about this since a while checkout By 2034...Education...Parent lottery ,  Up to something... &  Schooling...Listen to the art of listening . The word progress is loaded with expectations of advancing & looking at a kid only this context gets taxing i feel. When progress thought of as a defined path of advancement, it is illusion. If such a formula for advancement existed - world would have been a better place irradicating the poverty, isn't it? The world has been unfair. Including my kids has a fair advantage of being born in such a well placed family which is the parent lottery! Enabling kids to listen always with the fresh open prespective & deep love may lead ot understanding the value of equality of resources.

Prophet and the little soldiers!

Saw the 1st episode of a NetFlix series “Daughters of Destiny” . Thenmozhi, Manjula, Preetha, Shilpa & Karthika’s life is motivational. I felt Shanthi Bhavan is walking ahead on the road to my destiny. I loved the vision of  Shanthi Bhavan ! I’m committed to supporting them in whatever possible means I can. One with power and fortune control the Panchabhootha. I’m one among the fortunate. Dr. Abraham touches the concern, I’ve been pondering & preparing myself for a decade. In this modern era, one among my prophets is Dr. Abraham! I salute Dr. Abraham George. You’re inspirational Sir Dr. Abraham Geroge! I’m not sure if there is any one solution. But yes, as said the cruel world which favors the fortunate can be flipped upside down by sheer hard work & prophets! It may be hard, but it isn’t impossible! Yes, the dream of equality can be achieved through wisdom! To attain that utopia, we need to nurture a generation of kids who not only believe in themselves but wor

Schooling...Listen to the art of listening

In follow up to two blogs By 2034...Education...Parent lottery & Up to something... , Alt school  & Swashikshan - Indian Association of Homeschoolers seems to be attempting unique. The leading pitch is that it is personalized to the child! Alt school adds the technology. The way kids are wired to laptops somehow worries me. There is a moment where a kid realizes his skills and how he can take it forward. Till they are ready to listen, will any of the teacher's effort matter? Do we as teachers even need to bother or continue to provide customized education till the kid is ready to listen? How can we make the kid as a whole listen to real concerns of the world rather than mere issues? The age and maturity of the kids deem a lot to make this happen so are there any exercises which may be aimed to just enable this. A teacher & a child enters into the relationship together! Is there a formula to understand every kid? Every kid is unique for sure, so even if we devise

Up to something...

A decade before I watched the below talk from Sir Ken Robinson. It was inspirational & equally thought provoking. Parenting happened & I'm now a father two kids. The future suddenly becomes a concern, as if necessity made me realize that. My urge to become a teacher has been pulling me through this space over weekends & late hour online readings +  podcasts.  Jiddu Krishnamurthi  (JK) has been another person whom I've been following since a decade now. Most of my thoughts have been profoundly transformed by JK! In case you're interested in knowing more about JK,  A Jewel on a Silver Platter  is the best you can find on the planet. It is insightful! Furious podcast listening also reinforced that more folks in our generation like Naval etc. follow this is immaculate personality. The phenomenal clarity that JK had is still very relevant. His thoughts will be immortal! One among the many profound talks below caught my attention 8 years before.

By 2034...Education...Parent lottery

To give birth through a biological process is one small part. Bringing forth, that seems to be the origin of the word parent . It is how you play the cards which have been dealt with you that matters. A post shared by Anoob Backer (@becks007) on Nov 18, 2013 at 7:05am PST What does it mean to bring forth a kid? There isn't any guarantee how the kid might turn up. But like most of our life, parenting is a phase which happens. Rather un-consciously without deep contemplations! Not that we've to do deep thoughts but it happens like that.  The huge responsibility of a parent to look at the child as a whole & work towards building a better human is phenomenal. Isn't it? If a parent hasn't looked at themselves as a whole, will you be able to look at your child like that? Gaps you've has an impact on your child. In this era of a technology & lack of attention to a child, how can we even understand a child? Without understanding the child, you can

The letter Mm

The Egyptians knew that the form of the upper lip could depict the sound for M. Therefore they took the sign for the letter M from the picture of the upper lip. From this sign, the letter that we use for the beginning of the word mouth emerged, and the letter is also valid for any other word beginning with the same sound. In this way, the picture sign for the beginning of a word became the sign for a sound.
